24 June 2026, Online Lecture: German Colonial Architecture - From Contested History to Shared Built Heritage
Built structures from the violent period of German colonialism (1884-1918) have survived until today in Africa, Asia and Oceania. In their different scales from individual architectures and urban ensembles to cultural landscapes and infrastructural systems, they have gradually turned into highly ambivalent heritage sites in today's independent nation states. This event unites a threefold approach to tackle the ongoing challenges in this process, from scientific discussion and public outreach, building research and architectural practice. On the basis of a joint conference in 2023 at TU Munich and its open access publication "Monuments and Sites de-colonial"(2024), it also aims at re-activating the ICOMOS Germany Working Group of "Shared Built Heritage".
