The Emerging Professionals Working Group (EPWG) of ICOMOS Germany is pleased to announce the finalised programme for the international conference and summer school “Global Dissonant Modernities: Designing the Future for 20th-Century Architectural Monuments and Sites.”
Organised in collaboration with ICOMOS Kazakhstan, this joint event will take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 17-21 August 2026, bringing together a three-day international conference and a practice-oriented summer school. After an incredible journey of preparation and collaboration, we are delighted to share the complete programme, featuring a diverse range of panels, presentations, and discussions.
The event focuses on the conservation of 20th-century architectural heritage, particularly within post-socialist and rapidly transforming urban contexts. The conference will explore the complexities of recent architectural heritage and international preservation frameworks through four thematic strands: significance and legal frameworks, political and ideological dissonances, methodologies and capacity building, and conservation in practice. Alongside the conference, the summer school offers emerging professionals the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to a real-world case study in Almaty, fostering international exchange and hands-on learning.
