Climate Change
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. The negative consequences pose an ever-increasing risk not only for people and nature, but also for cultural heritage. Storms and natural disasters such as heavy rainfall events will become more frequent and more intense in the future. These urgent challenges emphasise the need for new and additional protection strategies. In addition, new questions of judgement arise for heritage conservation, particularly in the context of the expansion of renewable energies or the development of more climate-friendly cities. Finally, cultural heritage itself harbours enormous opportunities to contribute to climate protection by preserving what already exists. All of these points make it clear that climate change has a complex impact on heritage conservation and that this should be discussed.Following the conclusion of the "CCHIP Project: Connecting Culture, Heritage and the IPCC" at ICOMOS Germany, which was funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), the need arose to stabilise the discussion on climate change and cultural heritage within the framework of a new working group. In addition to thematic visibility, the aim is also to further develop the Position Paper produced as part of the project.
