20th Century Heritage (NSC 20C)
The NSC20C was established at the 2021 annual general meeting of ICOMOS Germany as a mirror group to the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Twentieth Century Heritage (ISC20C).The objectives of the NSC20C are based, on the one hand, on those of the International Scientific Committee ISC20C and its Triennial Action Plan 2021–2024, thus consisting primarily of promoting the protection, conservation, and communication of the heritage of the second half of the 20th century.
On the other hand, the Scientific Committee is to actively work on thematic priorities that arise in the national context in addition to the themes set by the International Committee. In this way, the topics and projects discussed internationally can be mirrored at the national level and supplemented by regionally or nationally relevant ones. As preliminary three working topics were chosen: 1) the understanding of the concept of monument or cultural heritage in relation to the heritage of the 20th century, 2) mass phenomena of the 20th century (for example, large-scale housing development or concrete as a building material), and 3) the dissonant or uncomfortable heritage of the 20th century.
The expansion of the NSC20C into a multinational German-language committee between Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg is also under consideration.
